INFORMATION FOR PROSPECTIVE TRUSTEES

Students’ Union status

The Students’ Union exists under the Statutes of the University, section 25 of which states ‘There shall be a Students’ Union of the University and Ordinances shall prescribe the Constitution, functions, privileges, and other matters relating to such Union’.

The Ordinances referred to and other University regulations concerning the Union are shown in our own constitution which can be seen at http://www.leicesterstudent.org/pages/your_union/democracy/constitution.html

Although the Union exists under the University’s statutes it is independent of the University and runs its own affairs. This independence was confirmed in a VAT case that went to the High Court in 2001 when  part of Mr Justice Rimer’s judgement stated ‘the Union is not an integral part of the University’.

Finance

The Union is in a sound financial position although its reserves are not large. A copy of the latest accounts will be forwarded on request if you call the General Manager on 0116 2231129 or email pk15@le.ac.uk.

Union Services

The Students’ Union at the University is a youthful and vibrant organisation offering a wide range of benefits to its members both commercial and non-commercial. It was voted Students Union of the Year in the 2005 Club Mirror Awards and was on a shortlist of 4 in the 2 succeeding years. It is looking to recruit trustees who have the ambition to keep it a forward looking and progressive organisation.

For details of the services we offer to our students visit http://www.leicesterstudent.org/ and the subpages attached thereto.

Trustee Responsibilities

Under the Charities Act 2006 the Union will become a registered charity and is expected to assume this status sometime during 2010. Currently the Union is an exempt charity. In preparation for this change the Union has already decided to appoint 4 external trustees to join the 5 elected Sabbatical Officers as trustees of the Union. We would expect the External Trustees to take office in August 2009 but would welcome their involvement in the Union before that date. We expect there to be some 6 trustee meetings a year. The Union will also be making major changes to its Constitution and Accounts to take effect from August 2009.

A job description for the Trustee positions is attached but for full details of a Trustee’s responsibilities go to http://www.charity-commission.gov.uk/publications/cc3a.asp
