The following information is taken from the University of Leicester Students' Union Health Safety Policy, which was designed provide guidance for the use of Students' Union vehicles. We strongly advise that you seek appropriate health and safety guidance from your external vehicle supplier.
1. All drivers must be properly registered with the Students' Union. In order to do so they will be required to produce evidence of having undertaken completed a driving assessment undertaken by a MIDAS trained Driver Assessor Trainer (DAT). This assessment will be organised through Leicester City Council. Student activities staff will provide contact details. It is the responsibility of activity leaders to arrange for adequate training to be undertaken.
2. Only persons aged 21 or over and holding a full (not provisional) driving licence for at least two years will be eligible for registration as a driver. The Student Support Centre Administrator will be able to inform people wishing to become Union drivers of the various entitlements they need on their licence in order to drive a minibus in the United Kingdom.
3. Activity leaders are responsible for undertaking risk assessments to determine an appropriate number of drivers for a given journey. The number of drivers needed for regular trips should be included in a student group's code of practice.
a. All drivers must sign a “Driver Declaration Form” which details their health and safety and legal responsibilities as drivers
b. In order to minimise the risk of accidents occurring through tiredness the Students' Union makes recommendations for the use of drivers (these recommendations are included in the Self Drive Hire Pack). The recommendations are more stringent than the current legal requirements and reflect the relative inexperience of student drivers.
4. Activity leaders will be expected to follow the Students' Union's Off Campus Activity Registration Arrangements in the organisation of all group transport.
