ACCIDENT AND EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

If you are involved in an accident whilst driving you should:
  1. STOP, as soon as possible, in a safe place, and switch the engine off.
  2. Check to see if any of your passengers are injured. Injuries such as shock or concussion may not be apparent immediately so if anyone is hurt call an ambulance.
  3. Police and the emergency fire service should be called if necessary. The nearest police station to the Union is Charles Street, Leicester Tel: (0116) 222 2222.
  4. Neither passengers nor vehicle should be moved, unless it would be dangerous not to do so.

LEGAL REQUIREMENTS
If you are involved in an accident which causes damage to any person or an animal (horse, cattle, sheep, pig, goat or dog) not in your vehicle, or to any other vehicle or roadside property, you are required by law to give the following information to any person who has reasonable grounds for requiring it.

In all cases:
a) Your name and address:
b) The vehicle owner's name and address which is:
The University of Leicester Students' Union, Percy Gee Building, University Road, Leicester LEl 7RH
c) The registration no. of the vehicle.
d) Name and address of the University's insurers and Policy No.

FIRE
Vehicles operating under a small bus permit are required by law to carry a fire extinguisher. However, the first priority, in the event of a fire, must always be to evacuate the vehicle as quickly as possible. Once this has been done the fire should be tackled ONLY if it is safe to do so. If in doubt call the emergency fire service. Remember that some types of fire extinguisher give off a toxic gas and should never be used in enclosed spaces.
