Porter Selected to Visit Israel

Aaron Porter, Academic Affairs Officer of the University of Leicester Students’ Union was selected as part of a delegation of seven ‘Young UK Student Leaders’ from across the UK to visit Israel and give a student perspective on the current political situation in the country.

The trip was paid for by the Union of Jewish Students (UJS), however it was arranged that the delegation met politicians, academics, religious leaders and bereaved families from both Israeli and Palestinian sides of the conflict.

Porter was accompanied by Josh MacAlister (President, Edinburgh University Students’ Association), Tobin Webb (President, Bristol University Students’ Union), Peter Mason (VP Education 06/07, Birmingham University Guild of Students), Jo Plummer (Education & Welfare Officer, Cardiff University Students’ Union), Ryan Slaughter (Campaigns & Representation Officer 06/07, UCE Students’ Union) and Nicola Heaton (Treasurer, Durham University Students’ Union).

The trip was very intensive over 5 days and included 2 days in Jerusalem, 2 days in Tel Aviv, a visit to the third biggest city in the country, Haifa and a helicopter tour over the north of the country to consider how geography has a role to play in any possible conflict resolution. The trip included the visit to a memorial of suicide bombing on a bus in Jerusalem, a detailed walk round the Old City of Jerusalem specifically looking at the Jewish, Muslim and Christian quarters. A visit to the Prime Minister’s office and a meeting with Mickey Harari a Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister, a discussion with a Palestinian activist, attendance at a Friday synagogue service, a joint meeting with an Arab and a Israeli from bereaved families (the Parents’ Circle-Families Forum), a trip to Masada and the Dead Sea, a trip to the Lebanon border and a meeting with a Member of the Knesset (the Israeli equivalent of the UK Parliament).

On returning to Leicester, Porter commented, “this was an incredible experience. I travelled to Israel with an understanding that the religious and political situation was very complex. However it wasn’t until I saw this first hand, and had the opportunity to meet with people on both sides of the conflict that I now feel more able to understand the complexities of the situation.”
