So what is the Elections and Rules Committee is all about?

Summary

The Committee shall ensure that rules are abided by and that all elections are open, democratic and fair.

Membership

Meetings

The quorum of the Committee shall be 50% of the current voting membership, but not less than two members.
The committee shall meet at least twice a month.

Powers/Duties

Members of the Elections and Rules Committee with the exception of Sabbatical Officers shall be excluded from holding any other post within the Union.

Elections

The Elections and Rules Committee shall, under the direction of an independent Returning Officer elected by Union Council, supervise all Union elections in accordance with the Election Regulations and shall be empowered to call and supervise a by-election in the event of any Student Officer leaving his/her post.
The Elections and Rules Committee shall, during elections, co-opt all Open Seats on Union Council to form an Elections Sub-Committee to assist with the supervision of the elections.
The Elections and Rules Committee shall be expected to attend the count for all elections.
The Elections and Rules Committee shall be responsible for the operation of all referendums as set out in this Constitution.
The Elections and Rules Committee shall be responsible for overseeing and arbitrating on all Association elections. The Elections and Rules Committee shall produce and maintain an election framework for the Association Elections.

Constitution

The Elections and Rules Committee shall be responsible for the interpretation of the Union's Constitution. Any such interpretation may be overturned by a simple majority vote in a Union meeting.
The Elections and Rules Committee shall act as Chair's Aide in all Union Meetings.
The Elections and Rules Committee shall be responsible for reviewing the Constitution and producing copies of it upon request of the Union Council.
All motions altering the Constitution which are carried in a constitutional manner shall be submitted to the Elections and Rules Committee who shall determine the wording of the amendments to the Constitution and any further amendments required as a result of the motion. All resultant changes shall be put to the next appropriate Union Council meeting.
The Elections and Rules Committee shall be empowered to form a Constitutional Review Working Group. The group shall fulfil such responsibilities as outlined in the Constitution.
The Elections and Rules Committee shall be responsible for the promotion of all general meetings in accordance with the provisions of the Union’s Constitution and any policies relating to general meetings.
