Unresolved Issues and Complaints Concerning Specific Individuals

Most of the issues that arise can normally be dealt with by the SSC. However, there may be times when you are unable to resolve an issue at that level or are unsure about how to proceed, especially if the complaint concerns an individual.

If an academic or departmental issue is unresolved it can be brought to :

Departmental Staff Meetings
Such meetings will discuss SSC issues. The University Senate has resolved that it is good practice for Departmental Staff Meetings to discuss SSC matters with Course Representatives.

Faculty Board
If staff meetings do not take recommendations further then, where a majority of the SSC agrees, an issue can be referred to the appropriate Faculty Representative, who can initiate discussions with the Dean of the Faculty, and if necessary, ask for the matter to be raised at the Faculty Board.

Undergraduate/Postgraduate Committee (Students' Union)
If you feel there is an important issue that affects students beyond just those you represent, you can ask a member of the committee to have it discussed at their next meeting. The Committee is made up of elected student faculty representatives, the Students' Union postgraduate officer, the Union President and is chaired by the Vice President (Education).

Education Unit
The Students' Union has a Unit dedicated to advising students about academic related issues and offer impartial advice. The Unit is overseen by the Vice President (Education) and is staffed by a full time Education Officer. The Unit will always be able to advise you as to the best course of action or to intervene on your behalf.

For complaints concerning specific individuals , help can also be obtained from :

Head of Department
The head of a department is the person to approach with problems such as relations with personal tutors or academic problems.

Departmental Senior Tutors
Some departments have their own Senior Tutor or a member of staff who is responsible for the personal tutor system within their department. These are suitable people to approach if students experience problems with their personal tutor or feel unable to talk to their personal tutor about a problem, particularly of a personal nature.

The Students' Union
The Students' Union Vice President (Education) co-ordinates all student academic representation and will be able to assist with any academic matters. For welfare-related problems such as child-care provision or harassment you can contact the Welfare Office or the Vice President (Welfare).

Whatever the problems - there is always someone who can help. Don't feel that you have to take responsibility for any individual issues or problems you may encounter as a Course Representative. If you are in any doubt as to who to see, don't hesitate to speak to Simon (Vice President Education).
