What is NaSTA?

NaSTA is quite simply: the national student television association

LeSTA 08 - The NaSTA Conference and Awards for 2008 was held in Leicester in March 2008. Shortly LUST will be sadly passing on the baton to SUSU.tv in Southampton who are hosting conference in 2009.

The National Student Television Association, or NaSTA as it is more commonly known, is the only group of its kind in the country: a representative body designed for & governed by student television for student television. NaSTA exists to not only draw new & existing student television stations together from across the entirety of Eire and the United Kingdom, but also to provide the platform upon which stations can ask each other for advice, overcome problems and nurture a community of like minded students & student television stations from across Eire and the UK.

As well as shaping and directing the long-standing inter station agenda of student television, NaSTA also holds a responsibility to work in heightening the awareness of and representation of student television in the eyes of the industry as a whole: from inviting guest speakers to address the conference, through to seeking judges versed in a wide variety of the aspects of the industry, to a basic understanding how student television necessarily runs on a day-to-day basis.

The quality, capability & content of student television is fast becoming indistinguishable to that of production houses across the country, and is in itself an indicator of the wealth and talent which student television attracts into a wide variety of roles.

What is Student Television?

Student television is quite simply: television made by students, for students

Student Television in Eire and the UK consists of stations run by students at institutions across the country producing a wide variety of shows and making them available to other students across a variety of media. The groundwork and basis of each station depends a great deal on the commitment of many to all of it members, not just those from vocational media courses but across every degree imaginable, doing everything from building equipment and filming shows to scriptwriting, book keeping and research. Almost all of the standards, skills and practises of the television industry and interpreted and applied by student television on an almost daily basis, on both a local and national level.

And so, for any student wishing to progress onto a career path into the television industry, being involved in student television is an invaluable & indispensable source of experience. From production, teamwork, leadership and training new members, the breadth of skills which student television can offer will often prove invaluable post-University, as these skills and personal attributes are of interest not just to television production companies but a wide range of employers from a whole manner of industrial and commercial sectors.

Why get involved in NaSTA 2008?

Getting involved is quite simply: going to put you ahead of the game

Commercially, companies are now waking up to the fact that the opportunities available through working with student television can prove to be lucrative & an invaluable way to raise brand awareness in an exciting and innovative manner which otherwise would not have been available to them in the past.

In less than ten years time, student television will undoubtedly prove to be the predominant field of student media, taking a lead on digital technologies and utilising the internet as a platform for distribution - maximising what once was a local audience, to a veritable global audience through a click of a button.
